SRM health camp-WORLD HEART DAY

CHENNAI: With cardiovascular diseases (CVD) emerging as the number one cause of deaths globally, with 1.75 crore dying every year, SRM University took the lead to fight against CVD by organising a health screening camp on the eve of World Heart Day.

SRM university officials said that the WHO had warned that by 2015, 60 per cent of the world’s CVD patients would be Indians. “With a 120 billion population, 30 to 40 per cent of them will have cardiovascular problems while 40 per cent of them in the age group of 35-40 would be vulnerable to heart diseases”, they said.

Stating that smoking, obesity, consumption of alcohol and junk foods were the root cause of heart diseases, Dr Ponnavaikko appealed to those who had turned up for the camp to exercise regularly.
