The Valliammai Society commenced its educational activities with humble beginnings. In 1981, the society took over the Nightingale Matriculation Higher School. In 1984, SRM ventured into higher education with the launch of the Valliammai Polytechnic. The first addition was to herald a milestone in higher education in this part of the country. The year 1985 saw the birth of the SRM Engineering College, one of the most prestigious institutions in science and technology and also the flagship institutions of the group. The college later added the Architecture programme, further enhancing its image. Every year new branches were added on and it has now grown into a full-fledged engineering college encompassing all disciplines of technical education. The demand for entry to the SRM Institute of Hotel Management was so two institutes, one each at Chennai and Tiruchi. The greatest advanage that the institution offered its students was the benefit of a deluxe hotel attached to each of the institutes.
In similar manner was launched the SRM Dental College in 1995 with a full-fledged dental hospital attached to the college. In 1996, the Valliammai Polytechnic received the much-needed relief with the launch of a sister a institution the SRM Polytechnic. In the same year the group made a foray into North India with the launch of the SRM Institute of Management and Technology at New Delhi. The latest addition to the group by the society is the Valliammai Engineering College, the third engineering college of the group, which went on stream in 1999. Hardly a year passes without the addition of new institutions or new disciplines by the Valliammai Society. The society has adopted a firm resolve to offer every possible branch of higher learning and is sparing no effort in realising this vision.
